The new Lexus IS is one of the better looking cars in its class and finally Lexus offers diesel engines in the line-up. This week, the regular IS 220d is joined in the range by a new sportier model unashamedly aimed at challenging the BMW 3 Series M Sport. The new Lexus IS 220d Sport boasts a sportier chassis and high level of standard specification for £26,925 on-the-road in the UK.
Though the Lexus IS sports a
de rigueur common-rail direct injection turbodiesel engine and its 175bhp peak power and 295lb.ft of torque look to put the
BMW 320d to shame, the IS uses quite a bit more fuel than the 3 Series and doesn't hold as much of a performance advantage over the BM as you mind think.
So with the Sport specification, the IS gains Lexus's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which as far as we can see is a fancy way of saying that a central processing unit uses various parameters such as speed, engine load, braking force and steering angle to determine which of the various safety systems to deploy. Lexus says it oversees the ABS, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) systems, as well as the electric power steering, to which the electronics can initiate steering assistance to prompt the driver which way to steer to counteract a skid. Unlike most systems, which react to a situation where the car is already on or over its limits, the VDIM engages earlier, which Lexus claims to result in less noticeable intervention and therefore smoother handling. We'll have to try it for ourselves before we believe that.
Aesthetically, the sharp lines of the IS are complemented by new 18-inch alloys hiding "sports suspension" while inside the Sport is fitted with alloy pedals, metal-effect trim and suede-effect upholstery, as well as heated seats and electric adjustment on both front seats. The Lexus IS 220d is well-equipped anyway with climate control, cruise control, a 13-speaker audio system with in-dash six-disc CD changer, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, electrically adjustable steering column and memory settings for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and door mirrors. The IS 220d Sport is on sale now, undercutting the luxury orientated SE-L.
