What's all this about?
This is Volvo's swoopy entry into the luxury saloon marketplace and it's called the S90. It gets its debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January in Detroit.
Will we get a hybrid model?
We sure will, as the T8 Twin Engine petrol-electric plug-in drivetrain has been confirmed for the S90, hopefully making the same 400hp and 640Nm as it does in the XC90. Elsewhere, the biggest Volvo four-door will have a semi-autonomous driving feature called Pilot Assist, which can gently steer the car to keep it in lane at speeds of up to 80mph, as well as cloud-based apps and a new feature in the City Safety drive assist package.
And what feature is that?
Large animal detection. We're sure you can work it out for yourselves. Essentially, it can spot if an elk, moose or horse steps into your path and take automatic evasive action. Although, in the UK, if an elk or moose steps out on you, something's gone seriously awry.
Can the S90 challenge the established marques in this sector?
Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Car Group, thinks so. He said: "With the launch of the XC90, we made a clear statement of intent. We are now clearly and firmly in the game. With (US) $11 billion (£7.32bn) of investment over the past five years, we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be - we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand."
