What's all this about?
There's a new A4 coming out later this year and Audi will have a shiny new engine ready for its arrival.
Which is...?
A four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged unit making 190hp, along with 320Nm from 1,450- to 4,400rpm and capable of returning in excess of 56mpg combined, which is pretty damned impressive for a petrol motor. It will be badged 2.0 TFSI, replacing the old 170hp 1.8 TFSI unit that you can buy now.
Will we see it in other Audis?
Yes once it has debuted in the A4; it's highly likely it will make its way into other Volkswagen Group products too. The engine weighs just 140kg in total and is, according to Audi, a 'prime example of rightsizing'.
Rightsizing?
Audi is trying to say that, while it's all well and good downsizing thirsty six-cylinder engines into smaller four-cylinder turbos, sometimes the units can get a bit too small for the car they're trying to propel. The 2.0 TFSI is therefore ideal for the A4, offering the perfect blend of performance and economy for its class. Theoretically.
