The Jaguar Advanced Lightweight Coupe (ALC) revealed in Detroit is the third concept car to come from Ian Callum's design studio, and it is the closest indication yet as to the look of the forthcoming Jaguar XK replacement. Being a show car, the ALC has been adorned with more extravagant detailing than would be expected in a production version. However, if you imagine the show car without the chrome inserts in the front bumper and wings, and perhaps with a smoother front apron and wheels of a smaller diameter, we reckon you are looking at the next XK sports car.

The Advanced Lightweight Coupe promises to be better in every respect to the current XK. Sharp styling aside, the ALC's name hints at the sophisticated aluminium chassis underneath (as pioneered on the Jaguar XJ). Apparently the ALC is 40% lighter and 60% stiffer than "a standard steel body", which is supposedly the outgoing XK. The weight reduction will have a considerable positive effect on the car's dynamics and performance. Powered by the latest range of V8 engines, including a supercharged version, Jaguar has already hinted at a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds and a top speed over 180mph, taking the fight straight to the latest Porsche 911, and even to the new Aston Martin V8, due to be launched at this year's Geneva motor show. Though useful for games of Top Trumps, straight-line speed is hardly the point of most cars; thankfully, the reduction in weight should bring about a natural agility too, making the jobs of stopping and steering more enjoyable for the driver (not to mention reducing fuel consumption).

Jaguar enthusiasts should be just as excited by the show car's luxurious interior. Trimmed in exquisite tan leather with exposed stitching, it is a fresh step forward for Jaguar, featuring extensive use of aluminium as well as an advanced telematics system with a touch screen and for the first time in a Jaguar a paddle-shift mechanism for the automatic gearbox. We look forward to seeing all these things in the new XK at next year's Detroit Show.
