Overall rating: 3 3 3 3 3

The new Hilux is a likeable thing, with plenty of appeal for those looking for a rugged but practical pick-up. But despite the step-change over the old model it already feels like second best next to some of its contemporary rivals.

Inside & Out: 3 3 3 3 3

This sixth-generation Toyota Hilux is definitely an improvement over those that came before, but it already looks a little dated next to contemporary rivals. Still, there's a rugged honesty about it - especially when finished in plain white - that will appeal to many.

It's just as stark inside, even in this mid-range HL3 version, and plenty of the plastics and switchgear will be familiar to owners of Toyotas from the early nineties. The rake-only adjustment for the steering wheel is a disappointment, especially as it doesn't adjust high enough. Still, on the plus side this double-cab has plenty of room for full-size adults in the back.

Ride & Handling: 3 3 3 3 3

If you thought the exterior looked rugged, wait until you experience the drive. Unlike a handful of its rivals, the Hilux makes no attempt to hide it low-tech origins and always feels like the pick-up it is.

Plenty of body roll is accompanied by lots of arm-twirling on the light steering in a bid to get a reaction from the front wheels, and the body moves excessively under heavy braking and acceleration. There's even a smattering of oversteer on offer around low-speed roundabouts thanks to the light load bed.

Of course, stick the Hilux in four-wheel drive and this is completely tamed. And despite the misgivings it's actually an absolute hoot to drive; just like a white van this pick-up needs the driver to be in the right psyche, at which point it all gels together.

Engine & Transmission: 3 3 3 3 3

Continuing with a theme, the 2.5-litre engine is anything but the last word in refinement. It's properly gutsy, though vocal enough to send vibrations into the cabin. The 144hp peak power figure might not sound a lot for a two-tonne vehicle, but the low-down 343Nm of torque makes up for any form of on-paper deficiency.

Which is good, as using the five-speed gearbox really does feel like stirring thanks to an exceptionally long throw and rubbery engagement for each cog. At least the ratio for fifth is well-judged, so the Hilux actually feels quite refined at higher speeds.

Equipment, Economy & Value for Money: 3 3 3 3 3

If you look past some of the fit and finish, like all pick-ups, the Hilux actually represents quite a lot of car for the money. You get a fully capable 4x4 that has space for five and their luggage (as long as they're happy for it to be exposed to the elements). True, even the HL3 specification could never be considered as plush, but you do get air conditioning, tinted windows and alloy wheels for your £22,615.

And if you're in a position to reclaim the VAT, then that price drops to an even more reasonable £18,890. The 38.7mpg combined economy from the 2.5-litre diesel engine is commendable, as are CO2 emissions of 194g/km in a vehicle of this size.
