Despite your likely first impressions, the car you see above is not a new version of the Ariel Atom; it's the SDR Sportscars V-Storm WR3, which does follow a broadly similar recipe to the Atom. There is a visible tubular frame, which puts the mechanical elements on show, and a mid-mounted engine. The main difference is that SDR puts the driver in the middle, with room for passengers either side.

Initially the V-Storm was offered with a V-twin, 1.0-litre engine from an Aprilia motorcycle. Now the company has added the option of a flat-four, Subaru engine with 'over 300bhp'. According to SDR the power-to-weight ratio now exceeds 500bhp/tonne. With that sort of power the claimed 0-60mph time in the 'low three second' region sounds plausible.

The Subaru-engined V-Storm WR3 is available in kit form from £3,995; turn-key versions start at £19,995. SDR Sportscars can also supply part-built cars or assemble vehicles using customer-supplied donor engines. The V-Storm WR3 Subaru is available to order now.
