Our annual pilgrimage to Le Mans happily coincided with the arrival of a V8 turbodiesel in the office car park. A more gruelling test of its mettle is harder to find, on-road at least. Unsurprisingly the Range Rover excelled.

The worst thing about the newest sled from Solihull may be the name. Land Rover decided to expand the Range Rover sub-brand with the new Sport (in both decaf normally aspirated and triple-shot Supercharged forms).

2004 Land Rover Range Rover (Td6 3.0 diesel Vogue)
Though the modern-day Range Rover competes with cars such as the S-class Mercedes and the Jaguar XJR, there remains a large market for diesel versions. Land Rover's parent company, Ford has a couple of state-of-the-art diesel engines in the pipeline for the Range Rover, but until then it is making do with a BMW-derived 3.0-litre straight-six. We had the opportunity to spend a week with a top-of-the-range Vogue version.

2004 Land Rover Freelander (Sport V6)
The SUV and soft-roader markets continue to burgeon and provide rich pickings for manufacturers in the niche. Land Rover has long enjoyed success in the upper stratum of the market in the guise of the Range Rover and has in more recent times extended their range downward with the Freelander. The Freelander has been a huge sales hit and has been a market leader in terms of its all-round abilities on and off-road.
