The Kia Sportage badge has been in Britain for the past 10 years. The current model offers three engines (2-litre petrol, 2-litre diesel and 2.7-litre V6 petrol) and two trim levels (XE and XS). Here we test the 2-litre diesel.

The Rio was replaced with a more mainstream car in 2005, with the range including a new 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine option. Not only is the Kia Rio diesel claimed to be more economical than its petrol counterpart, it's also more powerful.

You may not remember the last super-mini from Kia; it was a previous generation Mazda 121 re-badged as the Kia Pride. Believe me when I tell you that its owners were more proud of the algae living in their ponds. The Pride was not a good car. Kia still makes value for money cars, but no longer relies on Japanese manufacturers' cast offs.

For several years now Korean manufacturers have been offering simple, good value no thrills cars. The majority of these (with the odd exception such as Hyundai's Coupe) have sold on their price alone - in the same way Ladas used to - and keep the mini cab drivers of Britain in cheap reliable transport. The Sedona marks Kia's first foray into the MPV sector and they haven't done things by halves.
