A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO has become the most expensive car ever sold at auction, fetching an astonishing $48.2 million (£37.4 million at the time of writing). The car, previously driven by Phil Hill in the Targa Florio endurance race and successfully raced around Europe in the '60s, commanded a price more than $10 million higher than the previous record of $38 million (£29.5 million), also held by a GTO. Other highlights of the three-day auction, which took place as part of Monterey Car Week, included the sale of a one-off 1962 Aston Martin Le Mans racing prototype (also formerly raced by Phil Hill), which achieved $21.5 million (£16.6 million), and a Ford GT40 Mk II, one of Ford's 1966 trio of Le Mans winners that took in $9.8 million (£7.6 million).
