After nine races in the Winston Cup Series Jeff Gordon must have wondered if his luck would change
for the better. One week previously he crashed at Talladega, however, on Sunday at the California Speedway he took his No.24 Du Pont Refinishes Chevrolet to victory. This is his third race win of the
series but not before a string of poor finishes which included 3 races where he finished below the top 30.
The race came together for Gordon on lap 131.
Returning to the track after a quick pit stop during the third caution of the race, he found himself in the lead ahead of Mark Martin. The lead was to change a
number of times up to lap 164 when Gordon went to the front and kept the lead until the end of the 250
lap race. The only significant challenge came from Jeff Burton in the No.99 Exide Batteries Ford. The
win moves Jeff Gordon up to fourth in the series standings but he is still trailing leader, Jeff Burton, by
200 points. Perhaps he can close that gap at the next race on May 15th at Richmond International Speedway. Report here the Friday following that.
