Item 1 of 13: Jean Alesi takes the wheel at Jordan

It doesn't come as a surprise that Jean Alesi has been signed for Jordan for the remainder of the 2001 season. Only a day after Heinz-Harald Frentzen was sacked, the rumours about Alesi's move from Prost had started.

Jordan obviously were threading carefully so as not to upset Prost as they issued a statement to the press basically telling us to stop speculating! Alain Prost had responded to initial questioning by saying that Alesi was contracted until the end of the year at Prost and he was then free to do as he wished. However, Jean wangled his way out somehow, with the announcement that Prost let him go 'for the good of the team'. I think what he meant was that Jean would not remain motivated at Prost.

The Prost team have had a disappointing season, after very promising pre-season testing. However, there have since been rumours that the pre-season car was not legal, merely a way to attract sponsors. Even though Alain proclaims that he will be in F1 next year, there are further rumours flying about that the Prost team is losing money quickly. This is not helped by having to pay Ferrari $25 million for last year's engine. Saying that, Sauber are putting the same engine to good use.

The Prost outfit have taken on Frentzen as a replacement for this year, although he has been linked to Toyota for next year - this has not been confirmed as both Mika Salo and Allan McNish are definite 2002 Toyota drivers. Eddie Jordan was asked if Alesi will drive for Jordan in 2002, to which he replied: 'What is important to see is how things go for both parties over the remaining races of 2001, and then we will talk about next year.'
