PORSCHE 911 TURBO TO BE SHOWN AT THE FRANKFURT SHOW

Just when we thought that there could not be a better Porsche than the GT3, details of the to-be-revealed Porsche 911 Turbo leak out. Now, official details have been released, and pictures...... Just a little tantalising!

Depending on how the car's computers feel, the front wheels permanently transmit between 5 and 40 per cent of the torque to the road. The natural traction advantage due to all-wheel drive is enhanced by the Porsche Stability Management (PSM). This gives the computers the ability to brake any individual wheels to re-stabilise the car in a given situation. Of course, this may be turned off.....

The new 911 Turbo will compete with the latest Ferrari F360 Modena with a top speed of 189mph and a 0-62mph time of only 4.2 seconds. This is achieved with a 3.6-litre water-cooled version of the famous flat-six engine. No less than two turbos are employed to boost maximum power to 420bhp (at 6000rpm). The maximum torque figure brings tears to my eyes: 413lb.ft - at just 2700rpm. My God this car is going to feel quick. To help the hapless driver keep up is a six-speed manual gearbox and radiators which have 50% more surface area.

Accompanying the changes to the running gear are subtle, yet distinctive styling changes. The front end now resembles the Ferrari with three large air scoops feeding the radiators and front brakes. The body has been altered to allow further cooling to the rear-mounted intercoolers. The rear wing has been changed yet again and is complimented by a new engine cover - allowing more hot air to escape the engine bay.

Porsche's claims are usually not just that. Watch out for it.
