SPECIAL MOTORSPORT ASTRA OPC TO GO ON SALE

(14 September 1999 - General Motors press release)

The heart of the Astra OPC, co-developed by the motorsport specialists at the Opel Performance Center, is a high-revving 118 kW/160 hp engine which develops its full power at 6,500 rpm. Based on a standard 2.0 16V engine - the unit was up-rated primarily by means of optimized intake ports, a modified camshaft, a high-performance manifold and an adapted engine management system. As a result, the Astra OPC accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 220 km/h.

The Astra OPC

Maximum torque of 188 Nm is available at 4,300 rpm. A visually understated but highly efficient aerodynamics package - front and rear spoilers and specially designed exterior mirrors - significantly increases down-force without impairing the three-door hatchbacks excellent cD value of 0.30. The Astra OPC is equipped with 17-inch BBS wheels and 215/40 ZR tires. It is designed to continue Opel's clubmans motorsport successes and serve as a homologation basis for competition entries.

The chassis was lowered by 20 millimeters at the front and 10 millimeters at the rear with spring/damper ratings adjusted to significantly enhance high-speed cornering behavior. The elasto-kinematics of the torsion-beam rear suspension were adapted to meet the demands of more dynamic driving. The ABS-equipped brake system, with 308 mm ventilated, discs at the front and 264 mm discs at the rear ensures excellent deceleration. Additional air deflectors on the front suspension control arms enhance brake cooling.

The interior has a competitions look with Recaro sports seats in blue "Sky Line" design, blue safety belts, white instrument dials and a steering wheel covered in perforated leather. Production of the Astra OPC is scheduled to start in November 1999, with a limited edition of 3,000 units. Each car will have a serial number alongside the special edition emblem on the center console.
