Round 1 - Daytona 500

Valentine's day saw the opening round of the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Chevrolet dominated the event. Run over 200 laps of the Daytona Speedway the event unfolded with little or no incident. From the restart at lap 178 Jeff Gordon took the lead in his Chevrolet. He was to stay in this position until the finish, pursued closely by Dale Earnhardt. This was Gordon's 14th championship victory. The race ran for 3hrs 5mins 42s, with an average recorded speed of 161.55mph.

Round 2 - North Carolina Speedway

Last Sunday saw Mark Martin notch up his first win of the 1999 Winston Cup NASCAR series. This was also the first win of the series for Ford - the Blue Oval dominating the front of the grid. 10 years previously Martin took his first career win at this track. Pitting under caution on lap 357 Martin was never to relinquish his lead. Runner up in the 393 lap race was Dale Jarrett in another Ford. Jeff Gordan who took victory in the opening round at Daytona retired on lap 310 with engine problems.

Round 3 - Las Vegas

Brothers take one-two! Jeff Burton won the third round of the 1999 NASCAR series on Sunday at Las Vegas. In a real door handle to door handle battle Jeff held off his older brother, Ward, taking victory on lap 267. Jeff 24th and 28th respectively in rounds one and two of the series said he enjoyed the race and complemented his brother saying "He's a great race car driver, I said at the beginning of the year that his team would be tough, we just did a little better today".

Round 5 - Darlington Raceway

Jeff Burton took car 99 to its second trip down victory lane at the Darlington Raceway today. Having won on March 7 this gives Jeff and his No.99 Exide Ford, 4 top 5 finishes this series. Scheduled for 293 laps rain started to fall on lap 163 leading to a pile up which included race leader Burton. His car suffered front end damage and blown right front tyre. Lap 164 saw the race declared official with Burton taking the win.
