Juan Montoya went to Gateway confident that he could take his Reynard Honda to a fourth consecutive victory. His confidence must have increased further by capturing pole position. He led the race for a while but eventually ran out of fuel entering the long pit lane. This was to see him eventually finish in eleventh position. At half distance Michael Andretti took up the lead. A good fuel stop strategy ensured that he maintained his lead, he did come under some pressure in the closing stages of the race from Helio Castro Neves in the Lola Mercedes. Andretti brought his Swift Ford over the finish line victorious followed by Castro Neves. Dario Franchitti was in third place and lucky to be there. He tangled with team-mate Paul Tracy during the race while trying to pass him on the inside of turn two. Tracy came off worst ending up in the wall after the wheel to wheel confrontation. Roberto Moreno who is standing in for the recovering Mark Blundell drove a good race and finished fourth. Murph (Email) |
