This week we take a look at another road-going version of the cars competing on this years World Rally Championship - the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI. The presence of this car is even more scintillating than the Subaru Impreza. |
A high spirited exterior oozes rally development and cutting-edge technology, and turns this once staid faimly saloon into a supercar challenger. A bi-wing spoiler sits high on the bootlid. Even more spectacular is the front end. Twin air intakes are carved into the bonnet, but even more prominent is the large aperture beneath the bonnet line. This is filled with radiator and intercooler; for maximum cooling effect, the front number plate is offset. Under each extended wheel arch are OZ racing alloy wheels fitted with 245/45 ZR17 Tyres. Catching your eye through the spoked alloys at each corner are bright red Brembo racing brake calipers, all required to keep the 280 horses (officially...) under control. |
Sit behind the Momo leather steering wheel and you may be a little disappointed. The instruments are not as dramatic as in the Impreza 22B. Keeping your bum firmly in place however, is a wonderful set of Recaro bucket seats. Under bonnet the 2.0-litre twin-cam turbo engine produces 280bhp and 275lb/ft of torque at 3000rpm. Power is delivered to the four wheel drive system and controlled by limited slip differential to each axle. Alloy suspension is tuned to give positively leech-like handling. Mitsubishi have announced that the car will
be available in the UK during 1999 priced at just under 30,000. A steal, don't you agree?
