Feline good in the Ford Cougar

It seems like an eternity since Ford were contenders in the coupe market in Europe. Remember the Capri? The Cougar is a serious attempt by Ford to claw its way back to the top of this market segment, which already has worthwhile competition from the Fiat Coupe and the Peugeot 406 Coupe (among others). The Cougar's bold image comes hot on the heels of the highly acclaimed Puma. The combination of unique aerodynamic design and outstanding dynamics matching its little brother.

Sharing the same chassis as the Mondeo, but 20% stiffer, the Cougar has a lower centre of gravity which ensures stable and precise cornering. It is built at Ford's Flatrock plant in the USA, and is also marketed under the Mercury badge (as is the mondeo). Unlike its predecessor however (the Probe) this car is both stimulating and rewarding to drive.

Available in both 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre V6 versions, the Cougar can be enjoyed by a larger market as the engine types cater for the insurance groupings of both young and mature drivers. The 2.0-litre powerplant receives some modifications to increase power output but the 2.5-litre V6, similar to that of the Mondeo ST24, remains unchanged. Both engines are free-revving and are tuned to match a slick 5-speed gearbox, powering through the rev range with excellent low speed torque. The V6 takes the lead on performance and refinement as would be expected. It benefits from Ford's latest engine technology which includes some additional support from Cosworth (now split into Cosworth Racing and Cosworth Technology). The V6 produces 170bhp at 6250rpm, delivering a top speed of 140mph, while the 2.0-litre produces 130bhp at 5600rpm and has a top speed of only (!!!!) 130mph. The 0-60mph trip is reached in 8.2 seconds and 9.6 seconds respectively.

On the outside it is evident that Ford's "new edge" design philosophy has been applied to create a car with a strong visual presence. Large headlamps draw your main attention at the front. Even below the bumper there are uniquely shaped fog lamps. Each line and curve add detail and definition to this "new-edge" coupe. Sharp angles dominate the rear also, with the tailgate slicing it's way through the rather attractive rear light clusters. Attention is even paid to the design of the door handles and door mirrors. Enhancing the attractiveness of this super looking car are 16" x 6.5" 6-spoke alloy wheels with 215/50 low profile tyres. This is a car created to be an eye-catcher either standing still or on the move.

An inviting environment for the eager driver
In the cabin, much has changed from the Mondeo. A new dash panel finished with soft-feel black paint and gunmetal grey adds an effective sporting touch. Housed within the dash are new dials which in design are not the usual standard Ford items. The ventilation comes through vents, which are a touch retro, almost a reminder of the Mark 1 Cortina. Switchgear is positive and convenient to the user (unlike the original Cortina....). The leather sports steering wheel is the only hint of Mondeo in the cabin. While this may be considered as a car for 2 the seating arrangement caters for four - even if rear seat passengers may be cramped. The seats both front and rear are however, sporty and supportive. The only hint that this car is also on the U.S. market is the cupholder in the centre of the rear seats.
This is a car that will reward the driver with stunning looks and an exhilarating driving experience. It has a combination of style and refinement that just leaves the owner feeling good.
