The concept vehicle includes variable rate front and rear anti-roll bars, adjustable shock absorbers, and larger diameter front and rear disc brakes. Power comes from a Cosworth developed 2-litre turbocharged Zetec engine producing more than 200bhp. The power unit is complemented by a five-speed MTX-75 transmission with viscous coupled limited slip differential. The car stands on 235/40 tyres, mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels adding to the cars muscular appearance. Externally the new car will have a bespoke front bumper with integral fog lamps, and a roof mounted rear spoiler which will create significant stabilising downforce at high speeds. Relying on its sporting heritage, the interior boasts Recaro front seats, alloy pedals and a unique sports steering wheel and instrument cluster. This car already has a class-leading stiff, light body structure which will aid the handling, steering and stability for the serious driver. There is also a promise of future high performance derivatives from the Cosworth stable. Al Kamarer, Vehicle Line Director said "The Cosworth Focus was created by engineers from Cosworth Racing, working closely with Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering and Advanced Design departments".

The Ford Focus WRC finished third at the recent Monte Carlo Rally, round one of the 1999 World Rally Championship. The car was driven by Ford's new signings Colin McRae and Nicky Grist. The result however is pending appeal on Feburary 2, 1999.
