1999 Tour of Corsica Rally (May 7-9): Preview Round six of the World Rally Championship takes place this weekend on the island of Corsica. This round sees the sport being revolutionised not by new automotive technology, but by television! The final stage of Sunday afternoon will be televised live across Europe. The fastest person on the stage will collect three points to add to any already scored in the series. Retiree's from the event will even be allowed to participate on the nine-mile stage. The points gained on this stage could be instrumental in helping the lucky winner take the championship when it concludes in November. As detailed in this weeks news Peugeot Sport returns to the world rally arena this weekend with the new 206 WRC in the capable hands of tarmac specialists Francois Delecour and team mate Gilles Panizzi. Both drivers have the potential to set the tarmac alight and feature high up the leader board provided the 206 is blessed with reliability. Colin McRae will try again to give the Focus WRC its first win on tarmac. An unexpected third in the drivers' championship, Colin will be aiming for his third win on the island. While Makinen in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution leads the championship, the main threat is likely to be from the Toyota Corolla WRCs of Auriol and Sainz. In our preview of the last round, Catalunya, I predicted a serious challenge from the F2 Kit Cars. Yes one did win in Spain! The twisty rough tarmac may not suit the Citroen Sport kit cars of Jesus Puras and Philippe Bugalski, but if dry conditions prevail don't be surprised if one of these drivers is on the podium when the event finishes in Ajaccio at 1615hrs on Sunday. Keep in touch with The Car Enthusiast next week to find out how the event concluded. |
