Hyundai determined to get win on Portugal Rally
Hyundai continues its challenge for the 1999 Formula 2 World Rally Championship in Portugal between March 21-24. Kenneth Eriksson and Alister McRae will drive the Hyundai Coupes, which are run from the UK by Motor Sport Developments (MSD). Hyundai is going all out to mark the first anniversary of its involvement in the World Rally Championship with a maiden victory. It is exactly a year since the Korean manufacturer started out on the 1998 Rally of Portugal with a two-car team of Hyundai Coupes. Since then, Hyundai Motor Sport has progressed from being a novice outfit to a very competitive team (in the Formula 2 category for two-wheel-drive, non-turbocharged cars) with an excellent driver line-up.
The elusive victory should have came at the Swedish rally. However, Eriksson had an engine failure only a few miles from the end, while McRae had to contend with an oil fire. MSD managing director David Whitehead says: "We have the best driver line-up in F2 and I fully expect us to be right on the pace on every event." They will certainly be worth watching! That is certainly what the other manufacturers will be doing, and not only the F2 competitors - Hyundai will almost definitely make the move to full WRC specification for the year 2000.
