CHEVROLET CAMARO: AN INVOLVING DRIVE
- New design and tuning for V8 and V6 engines
- Lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions
After a thorough upgrading of the 5700 cc V8 and 3800 cc V6 engines, both variants of the Chevrolet Camaro have received certification as low-emissions vehicles under the stringent D3 standard.
In the V8, requirements were fulfilled through changes in the block and the addition of new catalysts mounted near the engine. In the V6, careful modifications in fuel injection and exhaust processing did not just reduce the engine's emissions but also lowered its fuel consumption. Consumption in the V6 automatic for example, has been cut by half a litre, to 23.7mpg, combined figure.
The Camaro has lost none of its excellent powertrain performance: the 3800 cc V6 engine reaches a top output of 193 hp at 5000 rpm and its level torque curve peaks with 305 Nm at 4100 rpm. The V6 is equipped with a central camshaft actuating two valves per cylinder via weight-optimised pushrods and rocker arms.
The Camaro Z28, a classic Chevy performance car, is equipped with the famous 5700 cc V8 Chevrolet small block engine in its latest evolutionary incarnation. Made entirely of aluminium, the V8 generates 288 hp from a modest 5200 rpm. The maximum torque of 437 Nm is available at 4000 rpm.
Like the Camaro V6, the Z28 can be ordered with four-speed automatic transmission. Unrelenting sports drivers have the alternative of a manual six-speed transmission. The Z28 reaches its maximum speed of 158 mph in fifth gear, while sixth gear is used as an economy speed; the long transmission rate allowing extremely rapid cruising with low noise and even lower fuel consumption.
All Camaros come with standard traction control that can be switched on and off. The V6 has an electronic accelerator pedal. Obviating a mechanical connection to the engine, the car's Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) assures a readier response to the driver's commands.
The Chevrolet Camaro is available as a coup, as a T-top with detachable roof sections, or as a full convertible. Its plentiful standard features include air conditioning, central locking, power windows, and a height-adjustable steering wheel. All models have driver and passenger airbags. Side impact reinforcements are built into the doors and beneath the attractive composite exterior, a steel frame surrounds the passengers like a protective cage.
The Camaro represents the best performance value for money car currently on offer in the UK; with a choice of 3.8 V6 or 5.7 V8, it offers excitement and performance in a car which, with four seats, is also functional.
The Chevrolet Camaro comes as standard with a comprehensive three years/60,000 mile warranty and six years anti-perforation warranty.
