The multi-Multispace |
Citron have been spurred on by the rapid sales success of the wacky Berlingo Multispace. Itself based on a commercial vehicle (the Berlingo), the Multispace is a people carrier with a twist. Even the styling is in a world of its own - not a bad thing amongst the Galaxy / Sharan / Serena crew. This summer sees the introduction of a host of new features and options, increasing the desirability and indeed the customer base. Emphasising this is a cheaper base version - 10,830 (UK). The car is now available with 3 engines; 1.4 and 1.8 petrol and a 1.9-litre diesel. Previously, the Multispace was available here with the 1.8-litre unit only. |
In reality, the Multispace tries to be several vehicles at once. The full-length sunroof gives it a sporty open-top feel. The passengers recline in estate car comfort, while the driver handles a car not much larger than a small hatchback - and probably more importantly, not much more expensive. We see the Multispace as a direct competitor for Honda's "Joymachine", and Citroen should use similarly catchy marketing if it is to enjoy such an image.
Practically, more options have been added, for instance ABS, air conditioning, passenger airbag and split fold rear seat are all new. Four new metallic colours (Helios gold, Quartz silver, Wicked red and Amazon Green) enhance the already bright look of the range. Outside, the new Multispace distinguishes itself from the original model with a new grille, bigger chevrons, painted door mirrors, two tone bumpers and new badging at the side and rear of the car. Inside, even more components are now colour matched to add to the funky colour coded seats, carpets and seat belts. |
For those of you with an "active" lifestyle (Citroen's word!) the massive hatchback opens to reveal a large boot space of 664 litres, which can be expanded to an enormous 2,800 litres - this is much larger than any estate car, therefore mountain bikes, surf boards, etc. should not be a problem. Neither should the weekly trip to Safeways...
Neat touches in the carrying area include tie down hooks, a retractable load cover to hide luggage and a removable rubber mat, which can be simply hosed down. Perfect for getting the trials bike into after a hard weekend on the mountains. Or spilled cream from the weekly trip to Safeways....
