HYUNDAI LAUNCH 2000 WRC CAR - IT'S AN ACCENT!

(Hyundai UK press release - 23 September 1999)

Operated by Milton Keynes-based Motor Sport Developments Ltd (MSD), and powered by a Mountune developed engine, the Hyundai World Rally Team began its campaign in the FIA 2-litre World Cup for Manufacturers in 1998, using the Hyundai Coupe Evo1. A refined version, the Evo2, was introduced later in the year and scored two podium finishes for the team before the end of the season. Extensive winter testing resulted in a much improved model for the 1999 season, with three wins and two second places already notched up.

The Hyundai Accent World Rally Car

During the course of the 1999 season, while the Formula 2 team were busy competing around the world, the MSD engineering division was hard at work designing the 2000 World Rally Car, and Mountune designed a new engine for the full WRC-spec. car. The bodyshell preparation work is carried out in-house, including adding the substantial roll-cage and the modifications necessary to house the extended wheel track and suspension.

Much of the component production is carried out by the MSD machine shop, while the brand new Schenck engine dynamometer is used to test the 300bhp turbocharged engine, developed in conjunction with existing engine partners Mountune Engines. The four-wheel drive system is produced by Xtrac, from a design concept originated by MSD. It is a development of the system currently utilised by Ford and Peugeot.

Both the current drivers, Kenneth Eriksson and Alister McRae, are driving for the team in 2000. Both are extremely excited about the prospect of a full season in one of a growing number of World Rally Cars.
