RENAULT CLIO RACES TO TOP OF EUROPEAN SMALL CAR SALES CHART

Story by Renault: (Dec 04)

For the Renault Clio supermini 1999 has been a super year with sales exceeding expectations across Europe, and with only one month of the year to go, Clio leads the supermini pack with 10.47% of the European small car market, ahead of competitors Fiat, Opel, Peugeot and Ford.

The Renault Clio's popularity across Europe is a direct result of the breadth of the range - from the economical Libert to the luxurious mini-limousine, Initiale and the sporty Clio 16V - which offers every customer the choice of equipment, engine and cost that suits them. The range is due to expand even more next year with the arrival of the Renaultsport Clio 172 2.0 16V.

Clio's main rivals for top slot in the European small car market are the Fiat Punto with 9.77% of the market, the Opel Corsa with 9.75%, the Peugeot 206 at 9.49% and the Ford Fiesta at 6.8%.

"New Clio was an immediate hit when it went on sale last year, taking an amazing 6,360 orders in its first week on sale in the UK," comments Tim Mack, Communications Director at Renault UK. "Clio continues to set the pace in the ever competitive supermini sector with distinctive design, class-leading levels of equipment and safety - including ABS fitted as standard to 75% of the range and three-point seat belts for all five passengers, both firsts for the class - all at prices lower than the previous Clio. When it comes to setting sales records New Clio proves that size really does matter."

Already, Clio sales in the UK sales are on target to hit the 100,000 mark early in the new millennium.
