MERCEDES-BENZ ADD FLAGSHIP AMG COUPE TO UPGRADED CLK RANGE

(Mercedes-Benz UK press release - 3 November 1999)

Mercedes-Benz has added a sophisticated high-powered 5.5-litre AMG model to its range of elegant CLK coupes.

The CLK 55 AMG coupe will be joined by the new 4.3-litre CLK 430 coupe and CLK 430 cabriolet models to offer customers greater choice from an extended range of two-door models.

Along with the three new models, launched in September, will be a host of enhancements to all CLK models to give even higher levels of comfort and safety. As with the recent enhancements to E-class, no price increases are being made, so the CLK range offers customers even better value for money.

Just get in and drive - stop talking about it!

The flagship CLK 55 is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine that develops 347hp and gives a top speed limited to 155mph. With a 0 to 62mph time of 5.4 seconds it is the fastest accelerating Mercedes-Benz production model.

AMG models combine all the hallmark traditions of Mercedes-Benz with the additional dynamic agility from the specialist AMG tuners.

The AMG design and styling changes are not just cosmetic; they reflect engineering changes on the car. The new front bumper has larger apertures which increase engine cooling. The side skirts and rear bumpers have been redesigned to increase aerodynamic downforce at higher speeds.

The increased power of the CLK 55 AMG requires a more powerful braking system. Brake discs and calipers are larger and the discs are ventilated.

The CLK 430's V8 engine develops 279hp and is also limited to 155mph. The coupe has a 0 to 62mph time of 6.3 seconds and the cabriolet version 7.4 seconds.

The new CLK430 will have a high level of standard specification including automatic climate control, leather seating, full electric seats, 17" alloy wheels and metallic paint.

UK on the road prices for the CLK55 AMG start at 59,640. The CLK 430 coupe starts at 45,640 and 50,140 for the cabriolet.

The exterior design of all CLKs has been modified with new body coloured front and rear bumpers and side skirts. The side mirror housings now incorporate indicator lights, a design first seen on the new flagship S-class.

Enhancements to the Avantgarde trim include new seven spoke alloy wheels, blue tinted glass and a light grey instrument cluster.

All CLK models will also have the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program (ESP) fitted as standard. This advanced traction control system automatically intervenes in a split second to correct the possibility of skidding. ESP was previously only available on CLK as an option costing 847.

A new five-speed automatic gearbox with tipshift will be standard on the CLK 320, CLK 430 and CLK 55 AMG models. This 'one touch' gearshift system, previously only available on the new S-class, makes gear changing even easier. When in 'drive' a gentle nudge on the gear lever allows the driver to change up or down the gearbox. An electronic control unit monitors the manual gear selections and only allows gear changes if they are compatible with the engine speed.

Other new standard equipment across the CLK range includes a multi-function steering wheel that allows the driver to have fingertip control of the car radio and car phone if fitted.

The driver and front seat passenger will be able to fully adjust the base of the seat at the touch of a switch, as another addition to the increased standard specification of the CLK.

UK prices for the CLK range start at 27,390 for the CLK 200.

The cockpit management and data system COMAND, which incorporates stereo system and navigation system will be available on CLK models later in the year.

Like all Mercedes-Benz cars the CLK has the benefit of 30-year mobilo-life cover. This effectively gives lifetime anti-corrosion protection and breakdown recovery. Combined with a three-year warranty, and a 24 hour, 365 days a year, Customer Assistance Centre, Mercedes-Benz now has a class leading warranty and support package.
