NEWcars: Peugeot 607 - UK specifications, 28 August 1999
The 607 has an elegant, French style

Peugeot revealed its stylish new 607 range of large, luxury saloons aimed at the heart of Europe's executive car market this week. The 607 is Peugeot's response to criticism of its predecessor - the bland 605. Peugeot have done well in distinguishing the 607 from its younger brother, the 406 too. The 405 and 605 were almost identical. Instantly, the 607 oozes style and sophistication. We are in no doubt that this will catch the eye of many a BMW and Mercedes-Benz driver.

The 607 bears the traditional Peugeot hallmarks: clean, classic lines, and state-of-the-art handling and roadholding. But these combine with a host of innovations to produce a car that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also safer and environmentally cleaner:

A revolutionary filter which destroys microscopic exhaust particles before they escape from the exhausts of diesel versions, automatic illumination of hazard warning lights under hard braking, a nine setting suspension system.

An overall richness of equipment is a characteristic of the new 607, which features a further 13 special high-tech systems to give maximum safety, comfort, and environmental performance:

  • Curtain airbags inside of the roof to protect passengers' heads
  • ESP - an electronic stability programme for better control of braking, steering, acceleration and stability.
  • Laminated side windows.
  • A multi-function plip to control locks for doors, windows, boot lid and seat memory.
  • A heat-deflecting windscreen.
  • A rear bumper sensor to aid reversing.
  • Automatic tilting of door mirrors while reversing and automatic folding of door mirror while parking.
  • A new twin-mode automatic gearbox: fully automatic with sports and winter settings or manual for sequential selection.
  • Automatic headlights - coming on in rain, or poor light.
  • Automatic windscreen wipers.
  • A combined radio/mobile phone system.
  • A four-door saloon, the 607, at 4.87m long on a 2.8m wheelbase, is one of the largest cars in its sector. To save weight (the body shell weighs 285kg), the bonnet and inner panels are in aluminium.

The new 607 will feature three new engines:

  • A 160bhp 2.2-litre petrol engine.
  • A 139bhp 2.2-litre common rail technology high pressure direct injection (HDI) diesel engine with particle filter as standard.
  • A 210bhp V6 24-valve petrol engine.

The new 607 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 14th, 1999, and revealed first to the British public at the London Motor Show on October 19th. It is expected to go on sale in Britain during the summer of 2000. Further details from those shows at a later date.
