NEWcars: 2000 Volkswagen Golf Estate, 25 September 1999

Prices for the new Volkswagen Golf Estate, which is now on sale, start at UK13,380 for the E 1.4 and rise to 20,365 for the V5 automatic, 110 less model-for-model than had originally been estimated by Volkswagen.

As well as the largest loadspace ever offered in a Golf, all models in the sixteen-strong line-up feature four airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, a three year/unlimited mileage warranty and 12 year anti-perforation cover. Specialist estate equipment includes load-bearing roof-rails, a luggage-compartment blind and a large underfloor storage compartment in the boot.

The VW Golf Estate will appeal to a restrained audience with taste for quality

At the top of the range, the 150bhp V5 priced at 19,540 is a more affordable rival to the ranks of prestige, German, 'lifestyle' estates, such as the BMW Touring. I don't think that the Golf will tempt too many buyers away from the Munich make though. The new V5 Estate (called the Variant in some markets) is also the most powerful and luxurious Golf Estate ever to be sold in the UK. V5 equipment includes fully automatic air conditioning, a sports interior shared with the Golf GTI, an alarm, front and rear electric windows, 16" alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres, three rear head restraints with rear seat centre three-point seat belt.

The V5 is one of seven engines which are available. Petrol units include 75bhp, 10bhp and 115bhp options as well as the 150bhp V5 previously mentioned. Three diesel units of 68bhp, 90bhp and 110bhp will also be offered. The latter, powering the Golf Estate TDI 110, enables this model to achieve a combined cycle fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg. All but the 75bhp and 68bhp engine are available with the option of four speed automatic transmission.

The new Golf Estate is far more stylish than its predecessor, but no sports car

Volkswagen believes that the combination of TDI technology and estate versatility will be particularly popular in the UK so the TDI 110bhp engine is offered with two trim levels, S and SE, at prices which start from 16,510 on-the-road. The distance between the Golf Estate and its rivals will widen further when the new TDI 'PD' 115 bhp engine, with a six-speed manual gearbox, is launched in October. Prices and details for these models will be released then.

The estate is offered in the same entry-level E trim as the Golf Hatchback. Standard safety equipment is comprehensive and includes driver and front seat passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and Isofix standard child seat mounting points. The Golf's security system is also employed in the estate. Its driving position is just as accommodating as that of the hatchback with a reach/rake adjustable steering column and height-adjustable driving seat fitted even to the E models.

Step up to a Golf Estate S and the standard equipment list also includes electric windows all round, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, and central locking. The list of features grows even longer at SE level with the addition of an alarm, trip computer, velour upholstery, eight speaker stereo radio-cassette, electric sunroof and rear head restraints. The 2.0-litre 115bhp engine, as employed in the Golf GTI and New Beetle, is available in the Golf Estate with luxurious SE trim priced at 16,495.

The tailgate opening of the Estate is wide and extends down into the bumper to give a low loading height. The sill is protected by a metal plate to protect the floor from wear and scuffing as heavy items are loaded and removed. Storage compartments are provided to the sides of the load-bay and also underneath the load-floor making best use of the space around the spare wheel. A retractable load-bay cover is provided as standard for security on all versions. Load-bearing roof-rails are also fitted. To these can be attached bars to carry skis, mountain bikes or an aerodynamically-designed roof box.

Customers can order manual air conditioning in lieu of the SE's standard sunroof for an additional premium. The extra luxury of leather upholstery with heated front seats is available on the SE and V5 models as an option. These and the S will also be offered with a choice between two in-car navigation systems, one with an integrated audio system and 5" colour display screen.

The V5 is the model to go for

The Golf Estate is a car with as many capabilities as there are likely types of owner. Retailers will be able to offer the customer a wide range of accessories including dog restraints, tough load-bay liners, mountain bike racks, tow-bars, alloy wheels and CD equipment. No doubt it will be successful.... *Yawn*
