Round 15
|
August 15 1999What a difference a week makes. The last round of the series in Detroit saw Juan Montoya being sidelined in a shunt, ensuring that he lost out on any championship points. The resilient Colombian bounced back with a win at Mid-Ohio last weekend. Team Kool Green driver, Dario Fraanchitti, kept the pole position he secured in Friday's practise, final practise being affected by rain. Franchitti led initially with Montoya back in seventh place. The canny Montoya held back following in the tow of the lead pack. When the first round of pit stops started he stayed out on the fuel he had conserved. He made up considerable track position, rejoining the race in third place behind Paul Tracy and Franchitti. |

As the race progressed Montoya piled on the pressure, closing in on Tracy. At the front Franchitti was suffering from a deflating rear tyre, forcing him to pit on lap 56. Montoya was now right up with Tracy and passed him on the very next lap. He continued and took his pit stop on lap 59, returning to the track over two seconds ahead of Tracy and Franchitti. It was a change in fortune for the Target/Ganassi Team following their poor showing in Detroit. Victory for Montoya has meant that he moves within one point of Franchitti. Six rounds remain in the championship which up to now has been one of the most exciting in recent years. The next round takes place on August 22nd at the 1 mile oval at the Chicago Motor Speedway. The Car Enthusiast will be back on August 28th with a full race report. Murph (Email) |
