Le Mans 2001 - MG SPORT & RACING LATEST NEWS AT LE MANS FROM THE MG XPOWER TEAM AFTER FIVE HOURS Story and pictures by MG - 16 June 2001. Time: 9pm Weather: Torrential rain, various cars’ wheels spinning on the straights. Overall positions after two hours: MG Lola EX257 Car 33 8th MG Lola EX257 Car 34 Retired MG Lola EX257, Car 33 Frank Dernie, chief engineer, Lola Cars International: "Kevin’s got his head down. He’s been lapping quicker than anyone else on circuit." Mark Blundell: "With mentors like Julian and myself – what else would you expect!" Kevin McGarrity: "What a way to start Le Mans in treacherous conditions – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it! The first laps I did in around here were in the dark last Wednesday and now in the race it’s wet." "I think if I got a dry stint it would be quite easy. It’s very difficult. The water is running down the inside of your visor and there’s an awful lot of spray. These are the most treacherous conditions I’ve ever driven in." MG Lola EX257, Car 34 Frank Dernie, chief engineer, Lola Cars International: "Car 34 driven by Warren (Hughes) was forced to retire with low oil pressure. We hadn’t had telemetry for several laps because of the water so we weren’t immediately aware he had a problem, until it was too late. Rob Oldaker, managing director MG Sport & Racing Limited: "To reach this far in our first year is a tremendous achievement. The speed is clearly impressive. The MG story continues into hour six with Mark Blundell at the wheel of Car 33." Relevant links: Full Le Mans 2001 round-up |
