GENEVA WORLD PREMIERE FOR NEW VAUXHALL AGILA

The new Vauxhall Agila which makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 2 March is the first European produced model launched into the growing mini MPV sector.

Agila is about versatile, practical and economical motoring, and is designed as an alternative to more conventional cars. It goes on sale in the UK in June this year.

Front-wheel drive Agila is powered by a choice of two multi-valve ECOTEC engines, a 12v 1.0 litre with a power output of 58 PS and a 75 PS 1.2 litre 16v unit. Both already comply with the Euro IV exhaust emission standard which comes into force in 2005.

Compact exterior dimensions (length 3.50 m/ width 1.62 m/ height 1.66 m) belies a spacious interior, with seating for four adults and a load area that holds 248 litres (VDA standard), enlarging to 598 litres as required. A 50:50 split rear seat, a tall, wide tailgate and low sill also make loading easy.

The high seating position and the large glass area of the new Agila allow excellent all-round visibility as well as giving the interior a light and friendly atmosphere. Rear passengers also enjoy good visibility, with seats 10 cm higher than those at the front.

Three interior fabrics are available, chosen to complement one of 10 exterior body colours.

The Agila, which will be available in one trim level, will have class leading equipment for a car in this sector. Both the 1.0 and 1.2 litre models will come with power steering, a split rear seat, a triple info-display, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, carpet lined rear boot, radio-cassette and a roof-mounted antenna, tinted glass and wheel trims.

Agila’s extensive safety package
Agila’s compact dimensions do not compromise its excellent active and passive safety credentials. A stable passenger compartment is fitted with side impact bars, driver’s airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioners and belt-force limiters for the front seats.

Vauxhall’s innovative Pedal Release System is also incorporated, where, in the case of a severe frontal impact the pedals release automatically, significantly reducing the risk of injury to the driver’s feet and lower legs. Vauxhall Fix anchor points allow for the fitting of the corresponding child seats and there are child safety locks on the rear doors.

A number of additional safety options are also available including the latest generation Bosch anti-lock braking system and a passenger air-bag.

Chassis dynamics
Excellent manoeuvrability and easy handling in town have been achieved with a MacPherson strut front-end and semi-independent rear suspension coupled to a short wheel base (2.36m) and short overhangs.

A turning circle of only 9.95 metres, aided by the Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPS) makes for easy parking in tight spaces. Agila is the only car in its class to have 14-inch wheels (fitted with 155/65 R 14 tyres) as standard, contributing further to its stability.

Agila engines
Agila´s two lively and economical multi-valve ECOTEC engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, and there is an electronic ‘drive by wire’ throttle.

Maximum torque from the 1.2 litre engine is 110 Nm, achieved at 4000 rpm, while returning a fuel consumption figure of 43.4 mpg on the combined cycle. The 1.2 litre four-cylinder engine will power the Agila to a top speed of 96 mph.

The smaller 1.0 litre three cylinder unit has a top speed of 88 mph and returns 45 mpg on the combined cycle. Maximum torque of 85 Nm is available at 3800 rpm.

Minimum servicing is also a feature, with the valve gear and camshafts being maintenance-free. Agila comes with a 12-year anti-perforation warranty.

Production starts shortly at GM’s newest factory, at Gliwice in Poland.

One hundred thousand Agilas are scheduled for build in the first full year of production.
