Story by Hyundai - 24 May 2000
TRAJET SET TO BECOME THE FAMILY FAVOURITE
Having made a world debut at last year’s London Motor Show, the Trajet - Hyundai’s first ever people carrier - will offer seven-seater practicality for a starting price of £15,499 on the road. Designed in Europe at Hyundai’s Frankfurt design studio, the Trajet’s package looks set to appeal to those families that are on a budget but don’t want to compromise safety or style. Although an entirely new market for Hyundai, the Trajet (meaning journey in French, pronounced Tra-jay) will continue the company’s reputation for value for money. All models will have standard de-powered driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), air conditioning, CD player/tuner, four electric windows, power steering and remote control central locking. The V6-model adds to that already lengthy list with leather upholstery, side airbags, alloy wheels, cruise control, sunroof and front foglamps. They won’t need to compromise on engine choice either with two Hyundai powerplants available. The entry-level 2.0-litre model with 133bhp will offer buyers a balance between performance and economy and is capable of covering the 0-62mph sprint in 13.1 seconds and of 31mpg fuel economy on the combined cycle. It will also be available with the choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Meanwhile, for those who want the best of everything, the flagship 2.7-litre V6 version will be launched in autumn 2000. The Trajet’s all-new V6 Delta engine has 167bhp and a considerable 244Nm (180lb ft) of torque. Equipped with a standard four-speed automatic gearbox, the V6 Trajet will get from 0 to 62mph in 11.5 seconds and has a 119mph top speed. A new 2.0-litre common-rail turbo-diesel engine will also be available in early 2001. However, beyond the Trajet’s impressive on-paper performance, it’s only in day-to-day use that the new Hyundai shows its full potential. Five individually removable rear seats, swivelling front seats, seatback tables and cupholders and fold-up trays are all expected by today’s demanding people-carrier buyer. The Trajet not only has all of these as standard, but adds a number of other features that help to make family life that much easier. Underseat trays, special holders for maps, bottles and pens, two front gloveboxes (despite the standard passenger airbag), four individual reading lights and a standard luggage net are just a few such items. In short, the new Hyundai Trajet has been designed for all the family, from pampers to pensioners. As with all Hyundai models in the UK, the Trajet will also benefit from a three year unlimited mileage warranty and three years' RAC cover. Built at Hyundai’s Ulsan No.2 plant, the Trajet will sell around 10,000 units in Europe in its full year of 2001, rising to around 20,000 in 2002. In the UK, Hyundai will be hoping to recreate some of the success that the Trajet has already enjoyed in Korea, by selling around 1,000 cars in its first full year.
