Sunday drivers. Don't you just love them? Even London's notoriously impatient drivers didn't seem to mind the city's streets being temporarily jammed by over 100 Rolls-Royces gliding through town. It's an early start at the SMMT's HQ on Halkin Street, the road filling up with Rolls-Royces of every vintage from the newest Ghost to some of the very first examples of the marque.

They've assembled to celebrate 100 years of the Spirit of Ecstasy, which was first fitted to Rolls-Royce models in 1911. "The Spirit of Ecstasy is a genuine icon, a graceful goddess who has adorned the prow of Rolls-Royce cars past and present," said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

Car Enthusiast has been invited to take part, feeling like imposters in a room full of genuine Rolls-Royce owners and enthusiasts. Though we are prepared; I've even pulled on some trousers rather than my usual scruffy jeans, donned my trusty flat cap and have the keys to a Phantom in my pocket. It's only mine for the duration of the drive, but for a moment I'm living the life of a Rolls-Royce owner - though sadly without the bank balance to match.

'My' Rolls-Royce will be one of the official cars, giving the attendees something to follow. There are several from Rolls-Royce's Goodwood fleet here, splitting up the procession of vintage and classic Rolls-Royces as they take a Sunday drive through London. Not just any old route, either, but one planned to take in some significant landmarks in Rolls-Royce's history - including its first showroom on Conduit Street, Charles Rolls' birthplace at 35 Hill Street and past Westminster Abbey, where Henry Royce is depicted in a memorial window in the north aisle of the nave.

With London traffic, roadworks and Chinese New Year celebrations causing road closures, keeping all the cars together is difficult, but whatever the hassle of the traffic it's beautifully unflustered inside the Phantom. Sitting high up in a driver's seat that's more like an armchair, threading the big Phantom though London traffic is a cinch. The steering wheel's slim rim feels lovely, the ride is beautifully supple and the engine is inaudible. On more than one occasion I have to check the instruments to see if the Phantom's V12 is actually running. Opportunities to dip into its 453bhp are few, with the power reserve meter (rev-counters are for the hoi-polloi) typically showing we're using 20 percent of the V12's power as we slip through town.

Then it's over some of London's famous bridges, through Parliament Square and out towards Syon Park in Brentford where the Rolls-Royces gather on the house's lawn. A short, but eventful drive that not only stopped traffic, but caused pedestrians to stop and stare, enjoying the unique spectacle of this multi-million pound convoy. All headed by a lady, poised elegantly on the top of each car's grille.
