MERCEDES-BENZ CLK RANGE REVIVAL - UK

The CLK is one of the best medium-sized luxury coupes on the market

Last week we reported on the German-spec update to the Mercedes-Benz CLK range. UK details have now been released. The 5.5-litre AMG model is to come to these shores in right-hand drive, topping off a very tasty range of coupes and convertibles. Also new are the 4.3-litre CLK 430 coupe and CLK 430 cabriolet models.

Along with the three new models, launched in the UK in September, will be a host of changes to all CLK models. No price increases are being made, so the CLK range remains expensive..... Let us take you through the new models.

The flagship CLK 55 is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine that develops 347bhp and gives a top speed limited to 155mph. With a 0 to 62mph time of 5.4 seconds it is the fastest accelerating Mercedes-Benz production model. The new front bumper has larger apertures which increase engine cooling. The side skirts and rear bumpers have been redesigned to increase aerodynamic downforce at higher speeds. The increased power of the CLK 55 AMG over lesser brethren requires a more powerful braking system. Brake discs and calipers are larger and the discs are ventilated.

The CLK 430's V8 engine develops 279bhp and is also limited to 155mph. The coupe has a 0 to 62mph time of 6.3 seconds and the cabriolet version 7.4 seconds. The new CLK 430's standard specification includes automatic climate control, leather seating, full electric seats, 17" alloy wheels and metallic paint.

UK on the road prices for the CLK55 AMG start at 59,640. The CLK 430 coupe starts at 45,640 and 50,140 for the cabriolet. Add to that Mercedes' traditional expensive extras for some serious outlay. However, you do get to drive the only car used as a safety car for the Formula One World Championship.

Mercedes-Benz have high hopes for the CLK - the high price is it's only downfall

The exterior design of all CLKs has been modified with new body coloured front and rear bumpers and side skirts. The side mirror housings now incorporate indicator lights, a design first seen on the new flagship S-class. The Avantgarde gains new seven spoke alloy wheels, blue tinted glass and a light grey instrument cluster. All CLK models will also have the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program (ESP) fitted as standard. This advanced traction control system automatically intervenes to correct the possibility of skidding. ESP was previously only available on CLK as an option costing 847.

A new five-speed automatic gearbox with 'tipshift' will be standard on the CLK 320, CLK 430 and CLK 55 AMG models. This one-touch gearshift system, previously only available on the new S-class, makes gear changing easier, yet more fun than an automatic. When in 'drive' a gentle nudge on the gear lever allows the driver to change up or down the gearbox. An electronic control unit monitors the manual gear selections and only allows gear changes if they are compatible with the engine speed.

No really darling, let me drive...

Other new standard equipment across the CLK range includes a multi-function steering wheel that allows the driver to have fingertip control of the car radio and car phone if fitted. This is becoming more common on luxury-orientated cars, and should eventually be a normal feature of interior design, from Mini to Ferrari.

The CLK has the benefit of 30-year mobilo-life cover. This effectively gives lifetime anti-corrosion protection and breakdown recovery. Combined with a three-year warranty, and a 24 hour, 365 days a year, Customer Assistance Centre. Are the manufacturers trying to put the AA and the RAC out of business?!
