What's all this about?
Remember that pilotless Audi RS 7 we told you about the other day, that was due to lap the Hockenheim Grand Prix circuit without a driver? Well, the deadline for the stunt has come and gone.
And did it crash embarrassingly on the way round, killing everyone in a five-mile radius?
No, it didn't. In fact, without a human on board, the GPS and 3D camera-controlled Audi pounded the track in a little over two minutes. Audi won't give a precise time for the lap but the projected 2m 10s benchmark is quick enough.
How fast is that, in context?
Well, a full-spec European Touring Car can only get round in 1m 48s, so for a robotic road car to get within about 20 seconds of that is a fine achievement.
How will this affect us in years to come?
It probably means more driver assist technologies on the bigger Audis, easing away the stresses of modern driving.
And taking away some of the driver's fun, too...
Well, there is that.
