What's all this about?
If you know anything about modern car design, you'll know the second-generation Toyota Aygo's look was inspired by two things: an egg carton, and the Japanese Manga comic Astro Boy.
Right. And I should care because...?
Because Toyota has decided to play up the car's Manga influence and create a self-fulfilling prophecy, by immortalising the Aygo in its own comic book creation.
I see. Any reason?
Simply because it seems quite neat to turn a car inspired by art back into said art. Cambridge-based illustrator Sonia Leong is the lucky devil asked by Toyota to create a brand-new Manga superhero, who will use a 'truly one-off version' of the Aygo as their mode of transport.
Hang on - didn't Toyota once do something mad with the old Aygo?
Yes, the mid-engined Aygo Crazy. Maybe this will be a Manga-rendered preview of a mental production Aygo to come...
Great, so when can we find out more about this story?
Sonia will be unveiling her work and new character on the Toyota stand at the 2014 MCM London Comic Con. It's being held at ExCel from October 24, and once the comic book has been revealed, a short Manga film will be made with the Aygo playing a central role.
Wait - one final thing: hasn't a Toyota been in Manga before?
You know your Japanese art onions. A Corolla AE86 was used throughout the Initial D adventure series.
