We all dream of that bargain buy, but Jack Perkins from Rugby, Warwickshire, beat us to it with his £60 Bugatti Type 35.
He bought the rare racer in 1950 for £60 and went on to enjoy the car for the next 38 years before his death in 1992. The Type 35 has since been on display at the Haynes Motor Museum until Mr Perkins' widow decided to sell it at auction.
Bonhams auctioned the car at its Goodwood Festival of Speed sale this weekend, taking the price from Mr Perkins' £60 bargain to a stratospheric £430,000. With a history of racing in the Indianapolis 500 and American National Championship, it could be said that this rare Bugatti still represents a bargain to its new and unnamed owner.
