Alfa Romeo is the latest manufacturer to enter the twin clutch foray with its FPT (Fiat Powertrain Technologies) developed offering. The compact MiTo will be the first model in its range to feature the all new twin clutch transmission in conjunction with the 135bhp 1.4-litre TB MultiAir engine. Prices start from £16,745.
Thanks in part to a start-stop system, the car will return 51.4mpg on the combined cycle, whilst releasing 128g/km of CO
2 into its surroundings, yet is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds. These figures translate as incremental improvements over an identically engined MiTo sporting a manual gearbox.
According to Alfa Romeo, the transmission interacts continuously with the braking, engine control, Alfa's DNA switch, start-stop, steering and stability control systems. Working within numerous parameters, the TCT transmission will modify shift change speeds and torque delivery.
