Vauxhall has revealed that the Astra Sports Tourer will cost over £500 less than the outgoing Astra Estate. When it goes on sale later this year the Sports Tourer range will start at £16,575.

Even though the price has come down the specification has improved. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESP).

The range starts with the 1.4-litre ES, which has 98bhp. The 1.7-litre diesel is cheaper - at £18,665 - than the outgoing 1.3CDTi unit and boasts CO2 emissions of 119g/km. There is also a 1.3-litre ecoFLEX diesel for £18,270 that puts out 109g/km.

Four trim levels are offered: ES, Exclusiv, SE and SRI. Optional equipment includes FlexFold, which allows each section of the 60:40 split rear seat to be retracted by pressing a button in the luggage compartment.

All Sports Tourers feature an extra 30 litres of luggage space over the Astra five-door hatchback. Boot space with the rear seats in place is 500 litres (with tyre repair kit instead of spare wheel).

The order book officially opens in October.
