Skoda has released a four-wheel drive model of its range-topping
Superb Estate designed to bring the value and space of the large load carrier to surfaces other than tarmac. The car comes offered with a range of one diesel and two petrol engines: 2.0 TDI (170bhp), 1.8 TSI (180bhp) and 3.6 V6 (260bhp).
According to Skoda, these engines, coupled with the fourth generation Haldex clutch, will ensure that the Superb can 'tackle the sort of slippery conditions that would leave its two-wheel drive competitors stranded'. The Haldex system transfers torque to which ever wheels have the most traction by taking signals from the ABS sensors.
When not needed, the four-wheel drive system is decoupled and the Superb 4x4 becomes a regular front-wheel drive estate, making sure that the benefits of four-wheel drive do not mean more regular trips to the fuel pump for the driver.
Prices for the Superb Estate 4x4 start at £22,420 for the 1.8 TSI SE model and it goes on sale at the end of February.
