At the recent launch of the
2010 911 Turbo a Porsche insider let slip that they'd seen pictures of the forthcoming Boxster Speedster, confirming that the car that's been spotted out testing is due for production. Reintroducing the Speedster name - last used on the 964-series 911 - if the Boxster-based model is true to the moniker's ethos, it'll feature a pared back interior, a lower, more steeply raked windscreen and a hood that's only really meant to be used as a last resort.
Lighter and more focussed previous Speedsters have featured basic door cards, thinner carpets, lowered suspension and a decent reduction in weight. The double-hump rear section under which the get-you-home hood resides is also a signature of the Speedster's styling. It's unlikely that Porsche will significantly up the output of the Boxster's engine to match, but a small increase like the 8bhp boost in power of the 2009 limited series Cayman S Sport model may feature.
Certain to be produced in limited numbers and command a healthy premium over the standard car, the Boxster Speedster should be in showrooms in time for the summer, with a possible introduction at the
LA show later this year.
