Daihatsu has announced its plans for the Tokyo Motor Show. Under the slogan 'Innovation for Tomorrow' four concepts will demonstrate a variety of small cars: e:S is a lightweight, frugal hatchback; Tanto Exe a compact MPV; Deca Deca a low-floored, easy-to-load vehicle; and finally, the 'basket' is an open utility vehicle for trips to the allotment - Daihatsu's description, not ours.

The e:S is an 'eco and smart' concept, apparently designed to underline the environmental benefits of small vehicles. Based on an existing platform, but with a shorter wheelbase, it uses lightweight materials and slim seats to provide seating for four in a car weighing only 700kg. The engine uses an Idling Stop System and Daihatsu claims that over 84mpg is possible.

The Tanto Exe and Tanto Exe Custom are lighter, more efficient versions of the existing Tanto - a tall, compact MPV sold only in Japan. These models are intended for production and Daihatsu is stressing the high quality, premium interiors designed to 'allow adults to enjoy the pleasure of driving'.

For a cross between supermini and delivery van the Deca Deca concept features a low floor and wide doors. Large objects can be loaded easily thanks to 'suicide' rear doors and the lack of a centre pillar. Inside the seats are slim and can be folded or positioned in a variety of configurations.

The final concept is called basket and it takes on the form of a utilitarian open four-seater. Similar in spirit to the Mini Moke or Daihatsu's early utility vehicles it is designed 'for trips to the family vegetable plot' and life at a slow pace. There is storage space for dirty tools while the seats are designed to feel like linen. Weather protection consists of a removable hardtop for the front seats and a canvas top for the rear.

Along with the concepts a variety of production models will be on display, including the Mira, Move and Copen. The Tokyo Motor Show runs from 24th October to 4th November.
