Mazda's MX-5 is celebrating its 20th anniversary and Mazda has created a unique concept to commemorate the occasion. The MX-5 Superlight version will be officially unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but Mazda couldn't resist sending out a few pictures of its birthday present to itself. That's about all Mazda is revealing currently, there being no technical details to speak of accompanying the images.
Power is likely to be provided by the regular MX-5's 2.0-litre unit, the Superlight putting its onus on enhanced performance through pared back weight rather than big-power engine modifications. The key weight reduction is the removal of the windscreen, the Superlight concept certain to be a follicle-tugging experience. Two speedster-style humps containing rollover bars behind the driver and passenger provide rollover protection for the windswept occupants.
Weight reduction elsewhere is likely to follow the more traditional route, with slimmer sports seats, junked equipment and exotic lightweight metals used on the wheels. The body may also feature composite panels to reduce mass. We'll find out more in September, where we'll also be asking if Mazda will build it. That's unlikely, but as with all concepts, if there's enough customer interest then Mazda might just well be persuaded. If you like what you see then get yourself down to your Mazda dealer and demand they get you one.
