What is it?
This is an all-new showroom-ready 'soft-roader' from the Czech arm of the VW Group. Skoda revealed a concept version of the Yeti in 2005, and though the new production car is notably different from that show model, it retains its character and actually looks rather good. It'll compete with the likes of the new
Kia Soul.
Why's it here?
Buyers want it all: go-anywhere practicality, a high-up driving position, decent ground clearance, long suspension travel for comfort and a rugged car that can cope with the best demolition work of a couple of sprogs. However, more and more buyers are looking for alternatives to the traditional SUV, which is why the soft-roader/crossover market is positively burgeoning. Reflecting the different needs of buyers is the option of front- or four-wheel drive.
Show stopper or floor filler?
While the new Yeti is hardly going to stop anyone in their tracks, it's a well executed piece of design, managing to mix aspects of an estate car with those of an SUV to good effect - it reminds us of the previous generation
Subaru Forester. Skoda's version will be powered by engines in tune with the times too, from 1.2-litre petrol to 2.0-litre TDI options. Prices and specs will be announced closer to the autumn on-sale date, but you can expect the Yeti to start at just £13,000 in the UK.
