Jetstream, a sportscar maker based in Cornwall, has announced the start of production of its SC250, a rear-wheel drive, mid-engined two-seater with a GM powerplant producing 250bhp and capable of 0-60mph in less than four seconds.
Testing by the low-volume manufacturer has been completed following the SC250's initial unveiling at January's
Autosport International Show and says that the first cars will be ready in 6-8 weeks, depending on customers' specifications, which can include gull wing style doors.
The engine (whose power output is reflected in the car's name) and six-speed transmission come courtesy of the
Vauxhall Astra VXR, but only 700kg to worry about in the Jetstream car. The SC250 can be run on either unleaded fuel or bio-ethanol with the latter claimed to increase power by 10 percent.
The low weight, achieved by using composite materials for the body and aluminium for the monocoque chassis, means that the power to weight ratio is 357bhp-per-tonne giving the sub-four seconds acceleration figure and a top speed of 165mph. Thanks to an electronic control unit, owners can also choose two settings for the car, depending whether they are on road or track.
As for the styling, Brian Rossi, formerly of Ford, is responsible for the car's hard edges and flat surfaces, claiming that the sole purpose of its design is aerodynamic efficiency.
Jetstream plans to manufacture 50 cars over the next year, with a 300bhp version planned for 2009. The SC250 starts from £29,495 and includes a full 12-month parts and labour warranty.
