BMW has launched two new diesel powered versions of the
1 Series Convertible. The new models are aimed at drivers who want a Convertible but are worried about fuel costs.
Both engines have already been seen in other models. The 118d Convertible uses a single turbo 1,995cc unit producing 143bhp and 221lb.ft of torque. With a six-speed manual gearbox as standard this translates into combined cycle fuel economy of 57.6mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 129g/km. BMW's claimed performance figures are 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 129mph.
The 123d Convertible is swifter, with a claimed top speed of 143mph and 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds, thanks to a twin-turbocharged 1,995cc motor that delivers 204bhp and 295lb.ft. Like its smaller-engined counterpart the 123d Convertible benefits from BMW's EfficientDynamics program and returns 52.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO
2 emissions of 144g/km.
Prices for the new models are £23,660 on-the-road for the 118d Convertible and £28,105 for the 123d Convertible; both models are available now.
In other BMW news, the Bavarian firm has announced that the 3-series Coupé and Convertible are now on sale with a seven-speed double-clutch transmission. The gearbox is offered on the 335i Coupé and Convertible as a £1,640 option.
As well as a new gearbox the 3 Series Coupé also receives the new 3.0-litre diesel engine from the 3 Series Saloon and Touring. The new motor produces 245bhp and 384lb.ft while returning 49.6mpg and 152g/km CO
2 emissions. The new 330d SE Coupé costs £32,935.
Finally, BMW announced that production of the X3 compact SUV has passed the 500,000 mark. Overall more than 1.25 million 'X' models have been sold worldwide.
