2019-05-14: First drive: Mercedes-Benz EQC

Mercedes has unveiled its first electric SUV, the EQC, the vehicle that will launch Mercedes' long-awaited electric sub-brand, EQ. The EQC, which will hit the roads in mid-2019, is a five-seat SUV with dramatic frontal styling, but an otherwise conventional look. Inside, it's gadgetry galore with large displays, plenty of driver assistance and a number of features to help eliminate range anxiety. That shouldn't be too much of a problem though - Mercedes claims a range of over 450km from the 80kWh batteries driving a pair of motors, one on each axle. Though it's heavy (over 2.5 tonnes), performance is brisk (0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds) and there's certainly enough going on here to trouble the likes of Tesla. The EQ line-up is expected to grow dramatically with eight models predicted by 2022.
