What's all this about?
We already know the outrageous Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe is on the way, and it'll be powered by a new 6.2-litre 'LT5' supercharged V8 engine that possesses the most stupendous brawn: it churns out 765hp and 969Nm. Well, now you can have the ZR1 as a Convertible too, making it one of the fastest ways to ruin your expensive hairdo in the world.
Crikey! Does the Convertible lose a lot over the Coupe?
No, it does not. Chevrolet says the aluminium tub of the Corvette is so tough that the only weight gain the Convertible displays, which is a mere 27kg, is all to do with the folding roof mechanism. Structurally, the only differences between it and the Coupe amount to the stowage for the roof and lower seat belt mounting points. And, from this point on, we warn you that some ludicrous numbers are heading your way.
Such as?
OK, how about 0-60mph in 'less than three seconds'? This, remember, from a rear-wheel drive American super-sports car, not some highfalutin carbon-tubbed thing with all-wheel drive and a twin-clutch 'box. Actually, talking of transmissions, the ZR1 either has a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed auto, the latter being a first for the ultimate Corvette. Anyway, back to the numbers - how does a top speed of at least 200mph, and more like 212mph grab you?
It grabs me very well indeed, but why the differences in speed?
Because the ZR1 Convertible has two different aerodynamic packages. The standard Low Wing delivers some downforce with the minimum of drag. That's the faster one, which can hit 212mph where permitted. However, for $2,995 (around £2,200), the ZTK Performance Package brings a carbon-tipped front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, specific chassis settings, Magnetic Ride Control and the High Wing. This adjustable monster promotes massive downforce and cornering grip. And when we say massive downforce, we mean massive downforce - fully 431kg of the stuff. That is a phenomenal amount for a road car.
OK, can you tell me anything else about the ZR1 Convertible?
Yes, it was revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show and has a US price that is $4,000 more than the ZR1 Coupe, meaning the Convertible comes in at $123,995. No idea what it would be if it is sold over here, but it's hitting US dealerships in spring. It's the first ZR1 open-top since the 1970 model year and the roof can be raised and lowered remotely, or on the move at speeds of up to 30mph. The ZR1 boasts 13 radiators in total to keep the blown V8 cool, as well as the engine oil, gearbox and differential, and a patent-pending exhaust system is said to give this flagship version the 'most aggressive sound ever' in the history of the Corvette.
