If you're a driving fanatic then you have probably spent many a summer touring Europe, or at least dreamt of it. With world class drives such as the Amalfi coast in Italy, the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, the Trollstigen in Norway and of course the Autobahn in Germany, motor heads are spoilt for choice. This continent is perfect for road trips, with such a variety of sceneries, topographies and brilliant weather, it comes as no surprise. If you are planning on driving in Europe soon, are you familiar with the countries driving laws you are visiting?
In 1993, The European Union was formed. This was an economic and political union formed of 28 European countries. A lot of the countries operating within the EU have many standardised EU regulations and laws. These things include free movement of labour, standardised fishing laws, banking regulations and of course its own currency, the Euro.
However, when it comes to driving, each country has very different laws. For example, did you know in Germany it is perfectly legal to drive in the nude, or in Spain you must carry a spare pair of glasses at all times if you need to wear them whilst driving? In Germany, many rural sections of the Autobahn have no speed limit, letting drivers reach top speeds.
When it comes to drink driving, many people jump to the assumption that limits are standard throughout the continent, whilst in fact these differ greatly, with some countries having a zero tolerance and others, such as the UK, allowing around a blood alcohol content of 0.08, which is around two 350ml glasses of five per cent beer depending on your weight. For this reason, anyone planning to drive in Europe should be clued up on the local drink driving limits of where they're visiting to avoid running into some hefty penalties.
Below is a tool taken from https://carhireexcess.insure/, which allows you to do just that. To use it simply find the country or countries in Europe you are looking to travel to and look up the BAC, dependent on whether you are a commercial, novice or standard driver. Once you have found it, go to the top and look up your weight on the table. Once you have done this simply follow the column down until you reach the BAC limit in the country you are visiting. To the far left of this figure it will tell you the number of standard drinks you can drink before reaching that limit. So, this allows you to convert BAC into how many drinks you can have to reach a certain limit based on your weight. Obviously these are guidelines only.
