It turns out that Chevrolet may be getting serious about selling cars in Europe, and not just cheap Daewoo throw offs either. Alongside the new Captiva SUV, Chevrolet will reveal a new large family saloon to be named Chevrolet Epica at the forthcoming
Geneva Motor Show.
First impressions are that this Chevy is a step in the right direction. The Epica features distinctive styling that while not exactly pretty, is actually appealing, with the Chevrolet motif proudly emblazoned on the front grille. Stick around for details of the specifications too, as they break from the norm.
At launch, the new Chevy Epica will be available with what Chevrolet reckons is the shortest six-cylinder engine in production. With a swept volume of just two litres, this unit's peak power is quoted at a modest 140bhp. However, what will differentiate it from rival powerplants is the characteristic smoothness and aural stimulation inherent in the straight-six layout. Most UK buyers are still likely to opt for the diesel version when it arrives a little later. Chevrolet is developing an all-new range of common-rail turbodiesels; the new Epica will get a 2-litre version with nearly 150bhp and a healthy extra wad of torque over the six-cylinder engine.
Predictably, the Chevrolet Epica is front-wheel drive, though at least transversely mounted engines free up interior space, of which the Epica has acres. We are awaiting prices at the time of writing, but expect the Epica to rival the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra on price, yet come equipped with more standard equipment and have more space.
