Volvo has announced that it held the four-door production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with its S60 Polestar.
It held? Sounds like you're talking in the past tense.
We are. The story runs thus: Volvo claims it stayed on after the 2016 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) race at the venue and did some timed laps with the Polestar road car. During that session, the Swedish flyer went round in 7m 51.110s, setting a new record in the process. Weirdly, Volvo then says it 'couldn't talk about the record for a year', although in an accompanying video it tries to bluster 'because we're Swedish, we don't like to shout about these things' (yeah, right), and since then both the Porsche Panamera Turbo MkII and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio have both gone considerably quicker around the demanding German track. Nevertheless, with the 2017 WTCC race coming up - in which Volvo's Polestar Cyan Racing team is taking part - it felt like the time was now to reveal the record-breaking run.
It's still a quick time, though, isn't it?
It is indeed and, if you want to, you can watch a short video about the S60 Polestar's feat right here:
